My building is in the north-east section of the campus, on the east side of Oxford Road between the Precinct Centre and the Maths Tower. The department occupies two buildings numbered 38 (the Kilburn Building) and 39 (the Information Technology Building), on the campus maps. Entry to the Kilburn Building on Oxford Road is via a walkway at first floor level. A bridge leads through to the Information Technology Building at the rear.
Access for wheelchair users
Most rooms in our buildings are easily accessible to wheelchair users. The exceptions are room 1.2 in the Kilburn Building and a few private offices on the second floor of the IT building. Our lecture theatres are raked, with access to the seating from stairs at the side; however wheelchair users will be accommodated at the back of the theatres. There is one lift, accessible from an additional entry point at ground floor level on the south side of the Kilburn Building, which can be used to access the mezzanine, and the first and second floors which the Computer Science department occupy. There is also a lift in the IT building; access is from the ground floor entry on the south side of the building. Disabled access points are marked on the map above and on the campus map. There is a limited amount of disabled parking next to the Kilburn Building. Wheelchair users requiring parking should contact Mrs. Lynn Howarth (telephone 0161 275 6154) prior to their visit and ask for the appropriate arrangements to be made.
By Taxi
There are taxi ranks at each railway station / Fare to University 2.50 - 3.50 / Fare from Manchester Airport approximately 10.00
Instructions for people who are blind or visually impaired - by taxi from Piccadilly Station
A form of words to give a taxi driver at Piccadilly Railway station are: "go south, out of town along Oxford Road. Go South under the Precinct centre bridge. We want the Kilburn building which is immediately off Berwick Street on the first left. This little road has a letter box on the near corner with an entrance blocked by barriers. There is a microphone in order to explain yourself. After moving through the barriers, the 'goods entrance' to the CS building is about 20 metres on the left. In the far right of this area (when facing the building) is a Porter's lodge. the inhabitant of this lodge will help you on your way. Be careful, as this area is a goods entrance and may be bestrewn with vehicles and other stuff". Another clue for the taxi driver is that the left turn from Oxford Road is just after the "Phoenix Pub" on the opposite side of the road.
By Bus
From Piccadilly Railway Station walk down the station approach to Piccadilly Bus Station. Take one of the following services: 14, 16, 41, 46, 48, 86, 142, 250. From Cross Street outside Boots the Chemist: 42, 44, 45, 47, 197. From Oxford Road Station walk down the station approach to Oxford Road. The nearest bus stop is outside the Palace Hotel. From Manchester Airport 43a and 45a
Instructions for people who are blind or visually impaired - by bus from Oxford Road station
Oxford Road station is on Oxford Road, a nasty 10 minute walk from the Department or three bus stops south. Asking for "the first under the Precinct Centre bridge" will leave you directly outside the Kilburn building. Walking in the same direction as the bus will ensure you encounter the kerb of the 'goods entrance' side road. Walk down the same side of the pavement after turning left and you'll find the entrance bay. Finding buses outside the station is relatively easy, but involves crossing a very busy road. Taxis may be rare at Oxford Road station.
